In 2023, air conditioner efficiency ratings are going to change. All SEER ratings will be replaced by SEER2 ratings as of January 1, 2023. These new regulations will be subject to regional variations and have a positive impact on the environment because of their increased heating and cooling efficiency requirements. Many things will be affected by SEER2 ratings, including energy consumption, utility bills, availability of replacement parts, and many other factors. J.C.’s Heating and Air is here to help you understand the upcoming changes in SEER ratings. This will help you make informed decisions about purchasing a new HVAC unit.
What are SEER Ratings?
The SEER rating of your unit measures the seasonal energy efficiency ratio. The number is usually found on the yellow sticker of your unit’s energy guide.
This is done by multiplying your home’s cooling output over the cooling season by the total electric energy input. Higher SEER ratings can reduce the energy required to cool your home, which will result in lower utility bills.
Air conditioners currently have a minimum SEER rating of 13; while modern units range from 13 to 21. The U.S. Department of Energy will increase the efficiency requirements for central air conditioners as well as air-source heat pumps in 2023.
New changes to SEER Ratings
SEER2 is an updated way to measure your unit’s efficiency. It uses a new testing method. You can calculate the updated rating by dividing the cooling output of your unit by the total electrical energy input.
The minimum SEER rating for the United States will rise by different values depending on the region. SEER2 ratings are determined by the number of British Thermal Units (BTU) in your unit. An HVAC contractor can determine the BTU value of your unit using specific measurements.
In 2023, units with 45,000 BTU cooling capacity or more will receive a minimum 14.5 SEER rating. This will enable homeowners to use less electricity to cool the same space.
Although greater AC efficiency has its advantages, homeowners may find that new units are more expensive as they attempt to replace them. This could also mean that older units may be more difficult to replace.
Benefits of buying a new AC unit in 2023
The new year brings improvements in efficiency, making it a great time to buy a new heating and cooling unit. A new unit will improve your indoor air quality and reduce your utility bills.
A new unit with a higher SEER2 rating can reduce your energy consumption. Upgrading to the most current technology will not only reduce your energy consumption but also provide environmental benefits.
