What Heating Systems Can You Consider for Your Home?

It may seem expensive and difficult to replace the heating system at your Knoxville home. Upgrade to a more modern model and you can save money over time. The newer models are more efficient than the older ones, and they may be better suited to Tennessee’s winters. We’ll look at some heating systems and their workings.

All About Heating Systems

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Heat pumps can be a good heating system in Tennessee. Heat pumps do not create heat. Heat pumps don’t create heat, but they do transfer it. In the summer, heat pumps work as air conditioners by removing hot air from the inside and releasing it outside.

Even when it is cold outside, the heat pump can still extract enough heat from the air. The warm air is then blown inside. As long as the heat pumps is running, this loop of transferring and extracting heat will continue. Heat pumps are very efficient because they can be used as a heater or air conditioner.

Geothermal heat pumps

Geothermal systems use heat pumps in a similar way to air-source heat pumps. The ground-source geothermal system does not transfer heat from outside air to indoor air and vice versa. Instead, it expels the hot air from inside into the cooler ground. It also absorbs the heat energy from the earth and delivers it to your home.

The temperature of the earth is relatively constant throughout the year, unlike air temperatures which vary. Geothermal heat pumps are expensive to install, but they’re very efficient in heating and cooling homes.

Ductless Systems

The name suggests that ductless minisplits and multisplits do not use ducting for heat delivery. The outside unit, inside air handler, and refrigerant are the main components of a ductless system. The outside of the ductless unit is connected to the interior by tubing. Instead of ducting, warm or cool air is delivered via the tubing.

You will need multiple units if you have a large house and you are using a ductless air conditioning system. Each room needs its own unit both inside and outside. Multi-split units can serve multiple rooms simultaneously. One outside unit can heat or cool several rooms with one inside air handler.

Forced Air Systems

The forced-air system or central heating is one of the most popular types of heating systems. The furnace heats the air and distributes it throughout the house via the ducting and registers.

Standard forced-air systems use a central thermostat to regulate the temperature throughout the house. In a house with several levels, you may find that the upper floors are warmer than the lower. The forced air system will still heat up rooms that are unoccupied or unused. It wastes money and energy.

HVAC Zoning

Your home HVAC system can be zoned to avoid wasting energy on unneeded rooms or overheating upper rooms. Smart thermostats control dampers within the ducting for each room or zone of your home. The thermostat will send a signal to the damper when the temperature drops below its setting. This allows warm air into the room.

You can adjust the temperature in a room to suit your preferences without having it affect the rest. Reduce the temperature in rooms that are not being used to avoid wasting energy.
